A History Conference

Peter Monahan

Andrew Bulger: Soldier, Governor, Secretary

Synopsis: Andrew Bulger, of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was, by his own reckoning, the only officer in the British forces in North America who both began and finished the War of 1812 as a lieutenant. The leader of a daring raid which led to the capture of two American schooners, he was rewarded with an important command on the Mississippi River in the winter of 1814-15. Yet, despite glowing testimonials from his superiors and years of effort on his own part, Bulger never received either the rank or recognition which he so richly deserved.

This session will briefly examine Bulger's claims and explore the political machinations and other factors which ultimately left him in undeserved obscurity.
